Filippidou, E. (2010). Recycling tradition: Dancing in Nea Vyssa, Evros. Alexandroupolis: Vyssas Municipality

Nea Vyssa is a community of refugees in the northeastern point of Evros prefecture, south of the old Greek city, Adrianople। In this community the music-dancing style has a distinct color। The particular color of Nea Vyssa gives to the community a peculiarity that differentiates Nea Vyssa from the rest of the Thracian area। Elements of the urban character of Adrianople are matched with the sweetness of the melodies of Asia Minor and Eastern Thrace, forcing trolling step dances and quiet style, which is affected by the civil costume of the community that is kept the body upright, limiting the intensity and the freedom of movement

The purpose of this research is twofold। First, to investigate the transformation of the dance forms in Nea Vyssa over the years and especially during the period 1920-2000, and secondly, the exploration of dance tradition and the transformations that occurred during this same period.

Finishing the research in the community of Nea Vyssa, we were led to conclusions that have to do with the evolution of the dances from one generation to another। The dances and songs of the first generation refugees have a uniform structure and style with dances from Asia Minor and Eastern Thrace. Dances of the second generation have retained some elements from the style of the dances of the first generation, but the coexistence with people by different cultures, had the immediate effect of widening the repertoire of dance and change the style of some dances. Finally, the dances and songs of the third generation, are influenced by their surrounding communities dancing, showing robust and lively style with a very distinctive rhythmic treatment, predominantly stylistic feature of the dances of Western Thrace.
